The article is devoted to the analysis of the scientific legacy of the outstanding Tatar folklorist Fatikh Ibragimovich Urmancheev (19361–2015) and his fundamental contribution to the development of Tatar Folklore Studies, primarily in the fields of epic studies and mythology.
The paper provides a detailed examination of key stages in the scholar’s scientific biography, from his early research endeavours to his final works on the Turkic epic.
The central part of the article presents an analysis of Urmancheev’s major scholarly works, including his seminal study “The Heroic Epic of the Tatar People” (1984), which laid the foundations of Tatar epic studies, and his final monograph “The Turkic Heroic Epic” (2015), which presents the epic as an integrated system.
The author emphasises that F.I. Urmancheev was among the first scholars to systematically study Tatar dastans in comparative perspective with the epics of other Turkicspeaking peoples. He revived academic research on the Tatar epic after a long period of stagnation and outlined promising directions for the study of dastans.
